Tossing back some Vitamin C when you’re suffering from a cold isn’t likely to help the virus run any faster, but according to WebMD, Vitamin C has plenty of benefits that you could be missing out on like protection against eye disease and wrinkling.

 

Losing out on the health benefits of Vitamin C isn’t the only reason you should worry about getting enough, low Vitamin C levels can lead to a bevy of health problems. Signs you may need to up your Vitamin intake levels include:

 

You easily bruise
According to the Mayo Clinic, Vitamin C Deficiency anemia (when your body doesn’t get enough Vitamin C) can make it easier for you to bruise. If you notice lots of bruising, on your arms and legs, try eating more Vitamin C heavy foods like Kale, Oranges or Red Peppers.

 

Nosebleeds
Did you know that most of the capillaries responsible for nosebleeds are located at the front of your nose? If you have less Vitamin C in your system, these capillaries become more sensitive which could lead to more nosebleeds.

Your body needs lots of red blood cells to carry oxygen through your body. Fatigue is a pretty common symptom for plenty of medical conditions, but if you’re feeling really tired and a bit down (or extra moody) amp up your Vitamin C intake and see if your mood improves. Irregular heartbeat

In fact, the study showed that people who had higher levels of Vitamin C but brushed less than twice a day had comparable teeth to those who brushed twice a day but had lower Vitamin C levels. Eat more Vitamin C to strengthen those chompers!

 

Swollen joints
A severe lack of Vitamin C in the system could result in Scurvy. One symptom of this disease in swollen joints and muscle weakness. When levels of Vitamin C are too low, collagen cannot form properly. Collagen makes up the connective tissue between joints. If your body can’t produce collagen the right way, your joints suffer.

 

Dry hair and/or nails
Collagen is key in many areas of your body, including keeping your skin healthy. If your body isn’t absorbing enough Vitamin C, your skin may develop small hard bumps, redness, wrinkling, and dryness, according to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

 

More frequent illness

If you are already low on the vitamin, your body will have an even harder time recovering.

 

Weight gain

An Arizona State University Study showed that study participants with lower levels of Vitamin C had higher body fat mass. If you’ve gained weight or your weight loss is at a standstill, trying eating foods that are high in Vitamin C or try a Vitamin C supplement to give your body a boost.
